"Reconciliation between our churches will help the Russian and Ukrainian people understand one another. As often happens between neighbors, we have many mutual historical problems, but we cannot build a future without Christian communication. The process of reconciliation will also help overcome Ukrainophobia in Russia and stop the Russification of Ukraine,” Patriarch Sviatoslav Shevchuk, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), said in an interview with KAI (Catholic Information Agency).

Many Catholics are unaware of the various Eastern Catholic communities within the Church. Pope Francis would not be one of them.

The number of Catholics in the world and the number of bishops, priests, religious men and seminarians all increased in 2011, while the number of women in religious orders continued to decline, according to Vatican statistics, reports the Catholic News Service.

Pope Francis had greetings for those Christians who, following the Julian calendar, are celebrating Easter on Sunday, May 5.

In this year’s celebration of the Lord’s Easter, we, the faithful of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, are called to re-discover for ourselves again and again the resurrected Christ as the unshakeable rock of unity of our nation.

I heartily greet all of you with the glorious feast of Christ’s Resurrection.  I hope that you will be able to fully experience the joy of this feast, which is the feast of our faith and our life.

On the first Sunday after Easter, May 12, 2013, our parish will be conducting the Easter Luncheon.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav (Shevchuk), Head of Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church received a letter from Holy Father Francis. The letter states:  "I thank you sincerely for the greetings which you sent me in the name of the entire Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church on my selection for Peter’s throne.

"In today’s world, it is difficult to be young, and it is all the more difficult to be a young Christian.  Persecutions were always intrinsic to the life of the Church, but in today’s western world they have changed -- they have become more refined and more hidden -- and thereby, no less threatening and destructive. Often a young person is embarrassed to speak about being Christian, fearing ridicule.”

Pope Francis on Wednesday called on Christians to await the coming of the Lord with trust and joy.
