On January 11th, 2014, Pope Francis established the Syro Malabar Eparchy of Saint Thomas the Apostle of Melbourne. This is the fifth eparchy in Australia. The Syro Malabar Catholics from India join the Ukrainian, Maronite, Melkite, and Chaldean Eparchies. The Syro Malabar Church, with over 4 million followers, is the second biggest Eastern Catholic Church in the world. The first is our Ukrainian Catholic church. There are 21 Eastern Catholic Churches. The head of the Syro Malabar Church is Major Archbishop George Cardinal Alencherry. |

What marks this specific BGM different from those in years past that it was the first time one had been held for the entire parish, and not just for one of the two Churches that comprise the parish. |

As we prepare to celebrate Australia Day we are reminded how blessed we are to live in a peaceful, stable, democratic and free country, whilst our brothers and sisters in Ukraine once again face a despotic and corrupt regime which deprives our people of those freedoms that we in Australia take for granted. |
