Why are there two Christmases?

My family celebrates two Christmases,and my grandchildren are now of an age to be asking:Why are there two?

I typed out my answer, of which I will give each of them a copy tonight. This is what they will read.

Ask the priest

Why we have a family dinner on Sviat Vecher (Christmas Eve) and why we serve 12 meatless dishes (not using any animal products to prepare them). Also why we do not serve dairy - smetana, cheese (varenyky) milk. Also some people serve alcohol, is that allowed?
