As part of our Christian obligations to show
love and mercy to each other, we are also required to pray for all
deceased - parents, friends, benefactors and even our 'enemies'. St
Augustine teaches that by praying for the departed, we contribute to the
release of those souls who are suffering in Purgatory and help them to
get to heaven; if they are on the heaven to help them give thanks for their salvation.
